The Similan Islands in Thailand are thought to have inherited their name from the Malay word ‘sembilan’ meaning ‘nine’ as the main part of the Similans Archipelago consists of a group of nine granite boulder islands. However, with the inclusion of Koh Bon and Koh Tachai as part of the Similans Marine National Park, there are 11 islands in total.
