About Us

Scuba World’s mission is to ‘create safe, comfortable, enthusiastic divers who always have a personal and enjoyable experience at Scuba World‘.

Scuba World was founded in Brisbane in 1979 by Ian McKinnon. Scuba World relocated to The Wharf in 1988 and is a world class dive centre stocking the worlds leading brands. Regular scheduled trips are organised to the ex-HMAS Brisbane Conservation Park, Mooloolaba Coral Reefs, and Moreton Bay Marine Park. Training of all levels of diving from Open Water to Dive Instructor are offered. Servicing of all equipment brands is conducted on-site.

Being in business for 40 years, Scuba World has grown into one of the leading dive shops in Australia. Located on the beautiful Sunshine Coast boasting seductive sunsets, breathtaking views and white sandy beaches.

Scuba World is the only dive shop in Australia that is an Aqualung Partner Centre and a Scuba Schools International (SSI) Diamond Dive Centre. This is the highest level world wide achievable. Scuba World employs 13 highly qualified and experienced staff, has a custom built 11.3 metre (38ft) naiad rigid hull inflatable boat, an onsite heated training pool, state-of-the-art rental equipment and a stunning showroom located on Brisbane Road in Mooloolaba, Sunshine Coast, Australia.

Ian’s son Mike is a partner in the business and the General Manager. Mike has been diving since 1997 and has been full time at Scuba World since 2003. He is an SSI Platinum Pro 5000 Instructor Certifier. His knowledge, experience, and passion for diving is one of the finest in the industry.

I SCUBA DIVE BECAUSE: Every time you venture underwater, you never know what you might see! 70% of the world is water – why not explore it. My favourite quote is: ‘From birth, man carries the weight of gravity on his shoulders. He is bolted to earth. But man has only to sink beneath the surface and he is free’. Jacques Yves Cousteau.

Mike is one of only seven active SSI Instructor Certifiers in Australia. This is the highest professional level you can achieve through the SSI system. Having dived in over 12 different countries and certified well over 800 people from Open Water level through to Instructors, Mike has a wealth of knowledge that puts him at the top of his profession.
